Red Barn Theater -
715-234-8301 Over 30 years ago, Nina Klaus assembled a cast of
performers on a make-do stage platform in Cap Hagen's
Hardscrabble Ski Chalet east of Rice Lake. Thus
began the Hardscrabble Players, now famous nationwide
for its excellence in Summer Stock theatrical
productions. When the Players discovered the Red
Barn in 1966 it had been used to store machinery for
about 20 years, but the current owner obligingly
vacated the building and allowed its use as a
playhouse so that the theater group could judge its
usefulness. From their start there in 1967 it
was a hit with the patrons, and the Hardscrabble
Players decided to buy the building and make the "Red
Bar Theatre" their home. In addition to
theatrical performances, displays by area artists are
featured during each play downstairs in The Gallery.
Through the efforts and contributions of so many, The
Red Barn Theatre continues to be a vital part of the
community. To carry on the legacy that Nina
Klaus began and worked on tirelessly for a quarter of
a century, a scholarship fund has been established in
her memory to help further the education of young
people dedicated to the Theatre Arts - the purpose
being to keep alive the dreams and tradition of the
Red Barn Theatre.
